Joe Darams – A luxury wedding and event photographer based in Essex, available across the UK and internationally.
“The camera is the least important thing I bring to a wedding or an event. Presence, patience, and the ability to anticipate a moment before it arrives – those are what the images are actually made of.”
Joe Darams Photography began the way the best things usually do – with genuine curiosity and no plan. A Photography Club at the University of Essex, a growing fascination with light, colour, people, and the unrepeatable nature of real moments. And the gradual realisation that documenting those moments with skill and intention was not just something Joe could do – it was something he could not stop doing.
Over a decade later, that curiosity has become a reputation. Two fully equipped photography and film studios. A client list that includes PUMA, Honda, the NHS, Specsavers, Ibis Hotel, Buzz Bingo, and hundreds of couples, families, and organisations who trusted Joe with the occasions that mattered most to them.
The through line across all of it has never changed; an unwavering commitment to documenting what is real, what is meaningful, and what deserves to be preserved exactly as it happened. Based in Colchester, Essex, Joe works across the United Kingdom and internationally, for weddings, corporate events, private celebrations, and every significant occasion in between.

I arrive before the day begins and stay until the story is complete. The first and last hours of any event consistently produce the most meaningful images.

The most important skill in documentary photography is knowing where the next meaningful moment is about to happen. The camera always comes second.

If something real is happening, I photograph it as it is. A posed version of something real is worth considerably less than the real thing.

Every image is individually reviewed and edited with the same care taken to capture it. No bulk exports. No unculled galleries. Never unfinished images.
A significant portion of the most meaningful occasions in this history have been multicultural and traditional celebrations – Ghanaian, Nigerian, Ugandan, Eritrean, Sierra Leonean, Zimbabwean, Jamaican and many others across the UK and beyond.
These occasions carry layers of meaning that a photographer without genuine cultural understanding will inevitably miss. The significance of a particular fabric. The order of a traditional ceremony. The elders whose presence anchors the room. The customs that look similar to others but mean something entirely specific to the people performing them.
Joe brings to every multicultural occasion not just technical skill, but genuine cultural curiosity, developed over years of being trusted with some of the most significant occasions in his clients’ family histories.
Your culture is not something we photograph around. It is what we are there to document.
We have documented this understanding in what we believe is the most comprehensive guide to Nigerian and African wedding photography in the UK, written from direct experience, not theory. If you are planning a Nigerian or African celebration, it is the most useful thing we have ever written.

Before any paperwork, we talk about your day, your expectations, your vision, and what matters most.

We arrive early, integrate quietly, and work with a calm, unhurried focus. Your images will tell a different story.

Your gallery arrives via a private online link, fully edited and ready to download. Delivered on time. No chasing. No surprises.
Every wedding and event is led personally by Joe, and supported by a trusted team of specialists selected specifically for each occasion.
